A LITTLE BIT OF BACKGROUND…
Joel Kohn is an Australian Academy (AACTA) award-winning filmmaker, producer, and writer-creator working across film, television, and commercials.
He recently completed production on his debut streaming series Gnomes—a comedy-horror for STAN—which he created and is also a producer and director on. The series is slated for release in 2026.
A past recipient of Screen Producers Australia's “Ones to Watch” initiative, Joel won the Emerging Producer Award in 2017 for his sci-fi project Seeker, which led to a first-look deal with Australian broadcaster SBS . In 2023, one of his original projects was selected as a top-12 finalist in the prestigious Content London Drama Pitch competition - out of over 200 submissions globally - and received a Highly Commended second place.
Joel’s previous directing credits include the hit kids’ series The Saddle Club (S3), a Vicscreen placement as training director on The Gloaming, and a range of TV commercials for premium brands. His 2020 short film The Mirror—supported by the Jewish International Film Festival Film Fund—won Best Short Film at the AACTA (Australian Academy) Awards. The film screened at over 40 festivals in 10 countries and was long-listed for 2021 Academy Award consideration.
