A LITTLE BIT OF BACKGROUND…
Joel Kohn is an Australian Academy (AACTA) award-winning filmmaker, producer, and writer-creator working across film, television, and commercials.
He is the creator of the upcoming Stan Original comedy-horror series GNOMES, starring Asa Butterfield (Sex Education). Joel also served as a co-producer (alongside John Molloy and Richard Kelly) and directed on the series as well. GNOMES launches in October on Stan in Australia, with international broadcast partners including Disney+ in the UK and ZDFneo in Germany.
A past recipient of Screen Producers Australia's “Ones to Watch” initiative, Joel won the Emerging Producer Award in 2017 for his sci-fi project Seeker, which led to a first-look deal with Australian broadcaster SBS. In 2023, one of Joel’s projects was selected from more than 200 international submissions as one of 12 finalists for the Content London Drama Series Pitch, and received a Highly Commended award.
Joel’s previous directing credits include the hit kids’ series The Saddle Club (S3), a Vicscreen placement as training director on The Gloaming, and a range of TV commercials for premium brands. His 2020 short film The Mirror - supported by the Jewish International Film Festival Film Fund - won Best Short Film at the AACTA Awards. The film screened at over 40 festivals worldwide and was long-listed for 2021 Academy Award consideration.
Through his production company Screen Invaders, Joel is developing a slate of ambitious, internationally focused film and television projects, with an emphasis on bold, entertaining genre storytelling.
